Which material grade is best suited for your project?
Alloy Steel Machining
SM Specialties can manufacture complex precision turned parts from a wide variety of alloy steel grades, including:
Popular and versatile, steel alloys 4140 and 4142 are carbon, chromium-molybdenum alloys. They are most suited for precision machining applications where strength, hardness and toughness are required. Heat treatment further improves the fatigue and surface strength of these alloys.
41L40 is the free machining version of 4140. The addition of lead and the process of cold drawing significantly improves the machinability of the alloy.
8620 is an alloy carburizing steel containing nickel, chromium and molybdenum. This low-cost alloy is flexible, wear resistant and well suited for conventional welding applications.
Steel alloy 52100 contains a high level of carbon and chromium, and has excellent strength and fatigue properties. It is commonly used for machining bearings and in applications that encounter high impact resistance.
