Alloy Steel Machining

Which material grade is best suited for your project?

Alloy Steel Machining

SM Specialties can manufacture complex precision turned parts from a wide variety of alloy steel grades, including:

  • Popular and versatile, steel alloys 4140 and 4142 are carbon, chromium-molybdenum alloys. They are most suited for precision machining applications where strength, hardness and toughness are required. Heat treatment further improves the fatigue and surface strength of these alloys.
  • 41L40 is the free machining version of 4140. The addition of lead and the process of cold drawing significantly improves the machinability of the alloy.
  • 8620 is an alloy carburizing steel containing nickel, chromium and molybdenum. This low-cost alloy is flexible, wear resistant and well suited for conventional welding applications.
  • Steel alloy 52100 contains a high level of carbon and chromium, and has excellent strength and fatigue properties. It is commonly used for machining bearings and in applications that encounter high impact resistance.
