Steel Machining

Which material grade is best suited for your project?

Steel Machining

Steel is an iron-based metal to which other chemicals such as aluminum, chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel etc are added, in order to enhance certain specified characteristics, such as hardness, machinability, ductility or overall strength.

Screw Machine Specialties has manufacturing capabilities with the following grades of steel:

  • AISI 1008 - a steel with low carbon content, this grade is highly ductile and is suitable for cold heading and forming.
  • AISI 1018 - a common, low-cost carbon steel used in many general applications, with good weldability. It is the best steel for carburized parts.
  • AISI 1045 is a popular carbon steel with 0.45 mean carbon, and offers good tensile strength and ductility. This grade is suitable for shafting and other transmission parts.
  • AISI 1137 is a resulfurized carbon steel that is suitable for wrought products; however, it is not suitable for welding.
  • AISI 1141 is a medium-carbon manganese steel with higher machinability and heat treatment response than other medium carbon steels. This steel is suitable for gears, shafts, bolts, studs etc.
  • AISI 1214 is a free machining mild steel that is used mainly in applications that involve extensive machining, and where strength and impact resistance are not critical.
  • AISI 1215 has replaced similar free machining grades such as 1212 and B-1113 in applications that require superior machinability and good surface finish.
  • AISI 4130 is a is a low-alloy steel containing chromium and molybdenum. It has good weldability and fatigue resistance and is therefore used in aero-vehicular applications.
  • AISI 4140 is a low-carbon high-alloy steel, with good through-hardening properties and toughness. It can be nitrided for superior surface wear.
  • AISI 8620 is a low nickel-chromium-molybdenum medium case hardening (carburizing) steel, with good toughness and tensile strength.
